Handleability
Bearded Dragons are one of the most handleable reptiles. They are easier to tame down when they are younger. If you adopt/rescue a dragon that has been inappropriately handled, they may have a tough time, or in fact never get used to you. If you are inexperienced we would recommend a youngster/juvenile, or to meet the dragon before rescuing/adopting.
Size/Colour
Bearded dragons when fully grown can reach between 18" and 24". Their size is perfect for beginners as they are big enough to hold and once they get used to you they do show to enjoy frequent contact with owners, though care should be seen when young children are around. They can have a many variety of base colours and patterns, usually brown/yellow with hues of orange and red. There are many owners/breeders who also dedicate their time to getting rarer colours, such as solid white, solid red, and many more.
Diet
Bearded Dragons are insectivores and herbivores. They will eat many of the common insects available ( Dubia Roaches, Crickets, Locusts) as well as a variety of leafy greens. Like in their natural habitats, young dragons tend to eat mainly insects, progressing to a herbivorous diet as they age. Fruit can be given, but only as a treat, as it is high in sugar.
Habitat
Bearded Dragons originated from the outbacks of Australia, so they need heat and plenty of it. Their substrate should consist of a sand/dirt mixture, with a tree branch or similar so they can go up and down the enclosure to regulate their heat. A basking lamp is a must, with a basking temperature in the high 30*c/90*F range. They also need some shade to cool down, and enough water to sip on. Their enclosure should have a cool side and a warm side, so an enclosure of at least 4ft long is recommended, but the bigger the better.
Lifespan
Bearded Dragons in captivity tend to live with proper care, between 12 and 15 years, though there are some recorded living up past 20. The key to living a long happy and healthy life is to take great care in the husbandry of the animal and making sure all it's needs are met.
Experience Level
Bearded Dragons are very suited to beginner keepers, as we have a very good understanding of their requirements by study over many years of their behaviour and natural habitat. If you are a first time keeper, it is a good idea to talk to your local pet shop about how life with your dragon will consist of and if you are able to commit to this. More experienced keepers will have a better time with adoption/rescue dragons, as they have a tendency to have health issues, due to improper care/neglect with previous keepers.
